Watch Out for Dog Flu

A newish disease, the dog flu or canine flu, is sweeping across the country. Thankfully, there is a vaccine for it, so if its spreading near you, you may want to consider having your pet vaccinated against it.

It is usually passed on from dog to dog, though a dog can catch it from a human if that human has been in contact with an infected dog. It is not passed from dog to human.

Symptoms in dogs are similar to a human flu. It apparently last anywhere from one to two weeks. Should your dog come down with it, he will have a fever, develop a cough, be congested and if not treated could end up with complications from it.

With cases now reported in over 30 states, many kennels are requiring flu shots for dogs before taking them in.

Building the Outdoor Kennel

To build an outdoor kennel fit for a canine king or queen, decide on how large an area is available first. An outdoor kennel size most necessarily depends on the size of the pet.

Choose fencing for the outdoor kennel that is durability, sturdy and impenetrable by stray toddlers or curious older children or adults.

Do consider ease of maintenance for the pet owner. Pets are as fastidious about their outdoor quarters as their owners expect them to be indoors. For a sudden downpour, an appropriate shelter sized for the pet should be available. Outdoor kennels should provide ample free run space for canine activity. Above all though have fun building the dog kennel and run.

Outdoor Dog Run Ideas

With the economy in such a mess today, many people cannot afford an outdoor dog kennel and run without some thought and creativity involved. Some of my favorite outdoor dog run ideas include buying your dog run one piece at a time.

Modular dog runs are available at discount stores for very reasonable prices. Start out small, with enough room to let the dog move around. Each payday, add a section of fencing and the original four pieces of fence will double in size after only four paychecks.

As you buy your nice large pen once piece at a time, it is possible to buy a few smaller sections of dog run on the weeks that your disposable income is at a minimum. These smaller sections are great ways to have your growing dog run go around a tree for shade.

Creative Ideas For Your Dog Run

I am in love with my modular dog kennel and run. There are several brands on the market today that allow you to buy extra fence panels that are very easy to fit in to enlarge your dog run space at a rate that harmonizes with your budget. I have been collecting my fence panels for quite some time, and often take part of the fencing with me when the dog and I must be out of town overnight.

My favorite design so far was the day that I set my modular dog run up around a tree at a campground that we were visiting. I started by making a four sided pen around the tree with four pieces of connected fence. Next, I added three walls out a ways to form the majority of the run. Across the front, I connected some of the shorter panels so that the doghouse was sticking out from the run surrounded by three pieces, then I closed the walls.

The result was that my dog could and did run around the tree in non-stop circles for exercise and step off to the side to lie in his portable house or eat. The tree kept the whole area shady and nice, and protected the dog from getting wet during a drizzly rainstorm. No matter which direction the wind blew, the tree provided a windbreak. And, Susie the dog enjoyed being able to see out in all directions while the tree itself was protected by a fence so we did not accidentally damage it.

When you own a modular run, it is very easy to think of fun and creative ideas for your dog run shape.

How to Build a Dog Kennel the Easy Way

Building the dog kennel and run is a fairly simple project when you have the right materials. One does not have to be especially “handy” to construct a place for their dog and it doesn’t take a lot of time to finish the project. In fact, if you have a few hours, you can have a nice kennel for your pet.

How to Build a Dog Kennel: The Right Materials

First, you will need to determine the size of kennel you need and then purchase the materials in the sizes that are appropriate. You can find the materials you need by shopping at various stores or by searching online. Fencing or chicken wire, a gate, clamps and posts are all necessary pieces for a kennel.
