I am in love with my modular dog kennel and run. There are several brands on the market today that allow you to buy extra fence panels that are very easy to fit in to enlarge your dog run space at a rate that harmonizes with your budget. I have been collecting my fence panels for quite some time, and often take part of the fencing with me when the dog and I must be out of town overnight.
My favorite design so far was the day that I set my modular dog run up around a tree at a campground that we were visiting. I started by making a four sided pen around the tree with four pieces of connected fence. Next, I added three walls out a ways to form the majority of the run. Across the front, I connected some of the shorter panels so that the doghouse was sticking out from the run surrounded by three pieces, then I closed the walls.
The result was that my dog could and did run around the tree in non-stop circles for exercise and step off to the side to lie in his portable house or eat. The tree kept the whole area shady and nice, and protected the dog from getting wet during a drizzly rainstorm. No matter which direction the wind blew, the tree provided a windbreak. And, Susie the dog enjoyed being able to see out in all directions while the tree itself was protected by a fence so we did not accidentally damage it.
